The Fair is our totem.
Let it be known.
As it ever was
Self done.
We like it like that.
Ours a Fair
The Haight Ashbury way,
with style
and pith.

I like this place. The Haight has been good to me, and I want to return the favor: I want to relish the exuberance of the neighborhood, to speak up for the people who live and play and work here. We are a passionately committed people. We’re not all heads, and we’re not all hard-working desk-job people either, we’re a cross section of one lively tid-bit of America.

Some of us are commercially-minded retailers, but many of us are politically radical, chubby lay-abouts, the ne’er-do-wells and the artists, writers, teachers and thinkers who made and make this village what it is – and why you want to live here. It’s a self-perpetuating society – if you can’t take the nabe – you leave.

Gentlemen Broncos, the newest movie by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess, plays on January 19 & 20.

The ‘70s grindhouse films return again with Black Dynamite, playing January 21 -23. It allegedly does the ‘70s exploitation thing better than Tarantino and Rodriguez combined.

Spike Jonez adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are plays January 24-26, in which imaginative boy Max escapes to an island filled with strange creature with wild emotions.

Paying homage to the slasher films of the 1980s, The House of the Devil plays January 27 & 28, and follows a young college student on an ill-fated babysitting job for a twisted married couple in a remote cabin in the woods.

Trimpin: the Sound of Invention is a bizarre and informative journey through the wild musical and kinetic world of an artist, inventor and creative genius. It plays January 29-31.

Playing on February 1 & 2 is Collapse, an intriguing interview with former LA Police officer turned independent reporter Michael Ruppert, who predicted the current financial crisis months in advance and now lays out his apocalyptic vision of the future.

The 1953 French classic Mr. Hulot’s Holiday plays February 3 & 4. It’s one catastrophe after another in this satire of vacationers determined to have a good time at any cost.

The spirited comedy Pirate Radio plays February 5 & 6. Set in England in the 1960s, the film follows a renegade DJ who fought back against the BBC by broadcasting from a ship at sea.

Playing February 7 & 8 is the classic 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Starring Gene Wilder as the eccentric proprietor of a fantastical candy factory, this movie brings the epic tale by Roald Dahl to life, full with Oompa Loompas, chocolate rivers and everlasting gobstoppers.

Sita Sings the Blues blends tragedy, comedy and music together in an animated retelling of the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. It plays February 9-11.

Woody Allen’s classic 1977 movie Annie Hall comes to the Red Vic on February 12-14. It is a funny and revealing film chronicling the love lives of several very neurotic people.

Danish director Lars Von Trier (Breaking the Waves & Dancer in the Dark) returns with his newest film Antichrist, playing February 15 & 16. It is a controversial story containing graphic images of sex and violence.

When John takes his SF friends to his dead uncle’s remote ranch to hunt wild pigs, it seems like a typical guys weekend with guns. But as John and his crew trek deeper into the forest, they begin tracking the awful truth of his uncle’s demise and the legend of The Ripper – a murderous three thousand-pound black boar! Their pursuit leads them through pot fields and into Pig Hollow, where a cast of violent and strange characters await them.

By the time the hunt is done, no one is innocent – or unscathed. Pig Hunt is a darkly comic horror film that combines the best of Deliverance, Jaws, and Diner, but remains uniquely Nor-Cal in it’s tone and scope. It is cinematic punkabilly – fresh, shocking and unforgettable!

Director Jim Isaac and writer Robert Anderson present at evening shows Friday and Saturday night. Additional surprises coming!

Playing Oct 30 – Nov 3. US 2008 (100m)
