Once referred to as the Israeli answer to Shpongle, Shulman is back with more spaced-out big beats over which sounds of fracturing crystals and mournful laser beams sum up our surreal, deep and harmonious lives.
Shulman’s latest work is titled Endless Rhythms of the Beatless Heart, and for a moment we were afraid it would be straight-up ambient (which you have to be on some serious painkillers to enjoy). But we found, quickly, that Endless brings the funk. The songs meander and stroll, and then quicken over deceptively intricate jangly guitar licks and build up more steam as break beats and glitch sneak in while the listener is distracted by a snake charming horn (I think it’s a Pungi).
Give yourself a late-January treat and pick up this album. It’s going to be hard to support your local music store on this one, so I recommend going either to Psyshop.com, or easier yet, iTunes. The latter is where I picked it up this morning, and I’m happily surprised with the strength of Shulman’s fourth full-length album (and how well it’s going with my coffee/Cinnamon Toast Crunch breakfast).
